Post Script:
MAN RAY PORTRAITS an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), until 27th May 2013, curated by Terence Pepper, assistant curator Helen Trompeteler. Man Ray American avant-garde art-photographer and painter based mainly in Paris, but at periods also in New York and Hollywood, Los Angeles. He was closely associated with the Dada and the Surrealist art movements, its membership and the arts fraternity in general in Paris.

Man Ray 1890 – 1976, born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, grew up in New York. The exhibition features portraits including Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tsar, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Tilly Losch, Dora Maar, Paulette Goddard, Ava Gardner, Lisa Deharme, Helene Perdriat, Kiki de Montparnasse, Lee Miller, Ady Fidelin, Juliet Browner, and many more muses, models, artists, actors, performers, writers, musicians, composers, associates, friends and lovers, displayed with over 150 vintage bromide prints.

Marcel Duchamp his close friend and some times artistic collaborator has been quoted as saying: "It was [Man Ray's] achievement to treat the camera as he treated the paintbrush, a mere instrument at the service of the mind".

Man Ray's portraits can use experimental effects, techniques or artistic improvisations "I produce accidents at will", in the Jazz age; sometimes hauntingly beautiful, visual puns, witty juxtapositions, sometimes absurdist. "Humour was the best communication of all" Man Ray has been quoted as saying. London, UK, 6th February 2013
