Swordfish

Another type of submarine from the Yellow Submarine is the French submarine ESPADON which means ‘swordfish’ in French. It was launched in 1958 ten years before the imaginary Beatles Yellow Submarine in 1968. Espadon could dive for up to 6 days, and travel up to 18 knots under water. In May 1964, Espadon travelled under sea ice in the Norwegian Sea as far as 70° north. Espadon original home port was Lorient, however since 1987 Espadon has been a popular museum ship at the fortified lock of Saint-Nazaire build originally by the German occupiers in the Second World War as a U-boat submarine base.
